Book Behind the Film "Underground" (1995)

    About the Book

The film "Underground" is based on the work of Dusan Kovacevic, a renowned Serbian playwright and author. The screenplay for the film was adapted from his play titled "The Spring in January" (original title: "Proleće u januaru").

    About the Author

Dusan Kovacevic is a celebrated figure in Serbian literature and theater. He is known for his sharp wit and ability to capture the complexities of Yugoslav society through his works. His plays often explore themes of political satire, social commentary, and the human condition.

    Film Adaptation

The film "Underground," directed by Emir Kusturica, takes significant creative liberties with the original play. While the core themes and characters are retained, the film expands on the narrative, adding layers of historical context and surreal elements that are characteristic of Kusturica's style. The adaptation is known for its epic scope and allegorical depth, which diverges from the more focused and intimate setting of the play.

    Key Differences

      • The film incorporates a broader historical perspective, covering several decades of Yugoslav history, which is not as prominent in the play.

      • There is a significant addition of surreal and fantastical elements in the film, enhancing its allegorical nature.

      • The characters in the film are more developed, with added backstories and complexities that are not present in the original play.

    Production

The shooting of the film began in fall 1993 and lasted off-and-on until early spring 1995. The state-owned Radio Television of Serbia had a small role in financing the film, and the film used rented Yugoslav Army (VJ) equipment as props.

A sprawling, rowdy, vital film laced with both outrageous absurdist dark humor and unspeakable pain, suffering and injustice.

It’s a heady mix, charmingly idealistic and bracingly clear-eyed, powerful and sad, and it sticks with you, and in you.

Underground is a bizarre, often repellent anti-war parable that takes forever to state the obvious but hits some scattered high notes on the way.

A rich, vibrant, visually spectacular survey of the changes the place has gone through during the past 50 years.

On balance, Kusturica is sturdier on style than substance.

A triumph of mise en scene mated to a comic vision that keeps topping its own hyperbole.

A cheerful, absurdist, full of life force and farce, whistle-blowing, but not justifying its duration. Sometimes you just want to watch and not delve into the content. And here, it seems that everything is overflowing with some symbols and metaphorical images. Glukhovsky his Metro here?

A large canvas in which director Kusturica managed to foresee the collapse of an entire country, a heavy film, imbued with a love of life in the most difficult period of world history. I recommend you check out what is probably the best film by Emir Kusturica.

A very Balkan film, covering fifty years of history of the peninsula of the same name. To be honest, I didn’t understand a lot from here, since I’m not very familiar with the history of Yugoslavia. The film didn’t really appeal to me, and there is practically no plot here – only allusions to historical events.

One of the craziest and most absurdly brilliant films I’ve ever seen. That’s what makes the film so captivating. It’s addictive with its recklessness and dramatic phantasmagoria. Not everything is clear, but it’s incredibly exciting. The soundtrack is also very memorable and sticks in your head.
