    Description

Book Behind the Film "Freeway" (1996)

    About the Book

The film "Freeway" is loosely based on the classic fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood," but it does not directly adapt a specific book. Instead, it draws inspiration from the themes and narrative structure of the fairy tale, reimagining it in a modern, crime-filled setting.

    Author

Since "Freeway" is not directly based on a specific book, there is no single author to credit. The film's screenplay was written by Matthew Bright, who creatively adapted the elements of the fairy tale into a contemporary story.

    Film's Correspondence to the Book

While "Freeway" does not correspond to a specific book, it takes significant creative liberties with the "Little Red Riding Hood" fairy tale. The film uses the basic premise of a young girl encountering a dangerous predator but places it in a gritty, urban environment. The characters and plot are original creations by Matthew Bright, making the film a unique interpretation rather than a faithful adaptation of any existing book.

Not for the faint hearted but should have been much bigger than it was.

    Austin Chronicle January 1, 2000

A white-trash riff on Little Red Riding Hood, the oddly titled Freeway is a road movie that hits a dead end.

Like it or hate it (or both), you have to admire its skill, and the over-the-top virtuosity of Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland.

    calendarlive.com February 14, 2001

It’s too drawn-out, too talky and, at the most crucial moment, needlessly implausible, to sustain its humor and large dose of violence.

    SFGATE June 18, 2002

Rude in the way the truth is rude – only funnier.

    Variety March 26, 2009

"Freeway" is a thoroughly nasty piece of work, the product of a filmmaker with a ludicrously misplaced confidence in his own cleverness.

    ReelViews January 1, 2000

    Both grimly funny and thought-provoking.

A funny dark film with a taste of "Little Red Riding Hood", excessively uncomfortable in places, but mostly funny. Kiefer Sutherland looks great as a pedophile (a strange compliment, of course), Reese Witherspoon didn’t really fit the role, but at least she tried. Not boring, dirty trash.
