Book Behind the Film "Ransom" (1996)

    About the Book

The film "Ransom" is based on a story that was originally adapted from a 1954 episode of "The United States Steel Hour" titled "Fearful Decision." The teleplay was written by Cyril Hume and Richard Maibaum. The story was later adapted into a film in 1956, also titled "Ransom!"

    Authors

      • Cyril Hume: An American screenwriter known for his work on science fiction films, including "Forbidden Planet."

      • Richard Maibaum: An American film producer and screenwriter, best known for his work on the James Bond series.

    Film Adaptation

The 1996 film "Ransom," directed by Ron Howard, is a modern reimagining of the original story. While the core premise of a child being kidnapped and the parents' struggle to secure their release remains, the film introduces new elements and characters to fit a contemporary setting. The screenplay for the 1996 adaptation was written by Alexander Ignon and Richard Price, who brought their own interpretations and updates to the narrative.

    Comparison to the Original Story

While the film retains the central theme of a ransom situation, it diverges significantly from the original teleplay and the 1956 film in terms of character development, plot twists, and resolution. The 1996 version focuses more on the psychological and emotional aspects of the characters, providing a more intense and dramatic experience.

    Reception

Ransom has a 75% rating from Rotten Tomatoes based on 72 reviews, with its consensus stating: "Directed with propulsive intensity by Ron Howard, Ransom is a fiery thriller packed with hot-blooded performances and jolting twists." Metacritic gave the film a score of 60 based on 21 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−" on an A+ to F scale.

Six is still a bit too small for a good thriller with a couple of good plot twists and a large number of recognizable and quite good actors. Gibson honestly even tried to cry, so this is rather a well-made movie for one time.

Good movie, at first I thought there was nothing interesting in the first half hour, I thought it was a usual tired theme, then it got better. But they could have shortened it a bit.
