Mike Myers created the character of Austin Powers for the faux 1960s rock band Ming Tea that Myers started with Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs following his Saturday Night Live stint in the early 1990s. Myers said that the movie and the character were inspired by the British films, music and comedy of the 1960s and 70s his father had introduced him to as a child. "After my dad died in 1991, I was taking stock of his influence on me as a person and his influence on me with comedy in general. So Austin Powers was a tribute to my father, who [introduced me to] James Bond, Peter Sellers, the Beatles, The Goodies, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore". Dana Carvey, Myers' long-time collaborator on Saturday Night Live and the Wayne's World movies, felt that the character of Dr. Evil was copied from Carvey's impression of long-time SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels and was unhappy about it.

Spy movie parodies are common, but Myers is observant enough to notice things that others haven’t.

I’ve always somehow passed over the cluster of classic Bond parodies (and successfully dodged the original, too), but it’s a gloomy day today, and I have nothing better to do, so I’ll just skip it. The film has both drawn-out cringe trolling and genuinely witty sketches, jokes so stupid they’re hilarious, and so stupid they’re just stupid-that’s the duality. I definitely won’t be watching it a second time, but it’s good enough for a quick laugh.

Who gave this film a 6.6 rating here? This is the bottom! Local joke level: dude is pissing. All! It’s all a joke. Yes, there is more humor in Die Hard! But he is first and foremost a fighter. If you want a parody of films about special agents, then it is much better to watch all parts of Johnny English.

Eh, in my youth the grass was greener, the trees were taller, the ice cream was much tastier and "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" seemed much more perky and fun. This assessment is only from old memory.
