Andrew Neiderman wrote The Devil's Advocate as a novel, and it was published in 1990 by Simon and Schuster. Believing his story could be adapted into a film, Neiderman approached Warner Bros. and claimed to have led his successful sale with the synopsis "It's about a law firm in New York that represents only guilty people, and never loses".

Taylor Hackford — Top Rated Movies

The movie’s greatest strength is that it becomes more complex and rewarding as it goes along.
[Hackford] seems stuck in a private limbo, unable to decide whether he’s making a special-effects flick or a pop-philosophical tract.
Rarely do we actually encounter such a brazen example of the 'so bad it’s good' genre of filmmaking.
"Devil’s Advocate" is "The Firm" meets "Rosemary’s Baby," with a good deal more wit than either John Grisham or Ira Levi...
Regrettably, an overblown finale and redundant trick ending undercut the mild subversiveness of what’s gone before.
You go in expecting a brazenly hokey, in-your-face portrait of evil, and that, I’m happy to say, is just what you get.
The movie never fully engaged me; my mind raced ahead of the plot, and the John Grisham stuff clashed with the Exorcist stuff.
Rarely do we actually encounter such a brazen example of the 'so bad it’s good' genre of filmmaking.
Although it’s nice for a film to be ambitious, there is such a thing as overreaching.
Pacino’s gleeful performance notwithstanding, "The Devil’s Advocate" descends into silly self-indulgence when it should have gone strai...
A highly enjoyable motion picture that’s part character study, part supernatural thriller, and part morality play.
The picture starts off slick and amusing, gets convoluted, draggy and strange round about the midway point, and ends up just plain ludicrous.
You don’t care about any of the characters, so there’s no fear of something nasty happening to them, and, with the exception of Pacino...
A fairly entertaining supernatural potboiler that finally bubbles over with a nearly operatic sense of absurdity and excess.
High art this may not be, and certainly no Paradise Lost, but fine filmic entertainment it most definitely is.

Wow. How come I haven’t watched it before? A good and atmospheric film. The ending was satisfying, although a little predictable. Translated to English

In 2000 I would have rated it a 10, but today it’s only a 7; although the film was interesting, it lacked something that would make me want to watch it again. But it’s definitely worth watching once if you managed to miss such a great film) Translated to English

Charlize is simply incomparable here. Watching Pacino play is, as always, a pleasure. Translated to English

God lost us at poker, and the 20th century is the century of Satan, with the face of Al Pacino. An incomparable film that raises the question: Is the Devil a man? Is man a devil? Translated to English

I’m a fan of Lovecraft’s cosmic philosophy, so the human demons here made me laugh worse than any comedy. It is worth giving credit to the cool Reeves and the artsy Pacino, the men pulled out this fairy tale. Translated to English

Overall the story is good. Great actors and atmosphere but not enough mysticism. And it was possible to shorten the film since the length was not too disappointing. Translated to English

I absolutely loved Pacino’s performance, which even surprised me, it was so good and natural. I liked everything except the ending, which was again created in my least favorite storytelling traditions. I also praise Charlize’s acting – she, together with the viewer, catches a specific crazy Translated to English

It seems that the role, and the film as a whole, was written under Al Pacino. The perfect devil. But I won’t ignore Charlize’s transformation either. A very strong film. Translated to English
