I remember a film called "A Monster Calls," by Juan Antonio Bayona, coming out about ten years ago. In it, a boy copes with his mother’s death through escapism, and an imaginary monster acts as a kind of therapist. Traditionally, the film offered a plethora of banal thoughts, tear-jerking scenes, and an epic, symbolic ending. On the plus side, it was quite well-shot (the director was a visionary, after all, not a piece of crap!), which is what I remember about it.

So, here’s exactly the same thing happening, only with the caveat that the victim of the local bogeyman’s psychotherapy session isn’t a young man, but Cumberbatch, who’s lost his wife. In short, this thing will once again be remembered solely because it looks so cute.
