    Description

    Сast and Crew

    Production

Shortly after co-writing Aladdin (1992) for Disney, screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio came up with the idea of adapting the story of Sinbad the Sailor in the vein of the story of Damon and Pythias before settling on a love triangle. They wrote a treatment inspired by screwball romantic comedy films with Sinbad as a reserved apprentice cartographer who joins Peri, a free-spirited female smuggler, on an adventure and falls in love. The story was based largely on the 'Simbad' comic book written and illustrated by Elena Poirier (1949-1956). In July 1992, Disney had announced they were adapting the story into a potential animated feature. The project was cancelled in 1993.

Fun, if standard, animated adventure with battles, innuendo.

Sinbad is both square and as flat as Sinbad and his sailors imagine the Earth to be.

A perfectly serviceable, if not especially inspired rendition of the oft-told Sinbad tale.

The graphics of the giant animals are disgusting, which is strange, because the rest is drawn well. The plot is simple and formulaic, but it develops interestingly. A beautiful love story and a well-developed moral are the main advantages of the cartoon, but still it is too unremarkable and simple. 5.5

The antagonist is simply top-notch. The pirates from Sinbad’s crew are funny. The adventures are generally interesting. But the cartoon itself is somehow unengaging. Perhaps if I had seen it as a child, I would perceive it differently now.

I wonder why Western critics scuttled this cartoon? In my opinion, these are quite good pirate adventures. Maybe because DreamWorks again stole the idea from Disney, who released a film on the same theme a month later? Or because of the huge amount of dog drool?
