    Production

Originally conceived as a television series, Mulholland Drive began as a 90-minute pilot produced for Touchstone Television and intended for the ABC television network. Tony Krantz, the agent who was responsible for the development of Twin Peaks, was "fired up" about doing another television series. Lynch sold the idea to ABC executives based only on the story of Rita emerging from the car accident with her purse containing $125,000 in cash and the blue key, and Betty trying to help her figure out who she is. An ABC executive recalled, "I remember the creepiness of this woman in this horrible, horrible crash, and David teasing us with the notion that people are chasing her. She's not just 'in' trouble—she is trouble. Obviously, we asked, 'What happens next?' And David said, 'You have to buy the pitch for me to tell you. Lynch showed ABC a rough cut of the pilot. The person who saw it, according to Lynch, was watching it at six in the morning and was having coffee and standing up. He hated the pilot, and ABC immediately cancelled it. Pierre Edleman, Lynch's friend from Paris, came to visit and started talking to him about the film being a feature. Edleman went back to Paris. Canal+ wanted to give Lynch money to make it into a feature and it took a year to negotiate.

After Twin Peaks, Lynch’s ideas are immediately visible. As if the whole movie is the White House, where, as always, the devil is going on. Thank you, even though the dialogues were not the other way around. Cool, I like it.

A puzzle film about two lesbians. I don’t particularly like solving riddles while watching a movie, I prefer to have everything explained to me at the end. This didn’t happen here, so I stupidly read someone else’s analysis, admired Lynch’s ability to create surrealism and gave the film a 7. Translated to English

Almost 10 years after the last viewing, I re-watched Lynch’s imperishable work, timing it to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Naomi Watts, who played her best role in it. Translated to English

The most beautiful, sensual, intoxicating and mysterious, and at times insanely creepy and uncomfortable movie, in which you want to dissolve. Of course, a pearl of cinema and one of Lynch’s best works, to which you want to return again and again. One of my favorite movies of all time. Translated to English

I watched it at the cinema. Lynch’s favorite film, which I admire for its brain as a complex picture with many interpretations and little details. That being said, unlike his other later works, it resonates with me as an atmospheric and dramatic work. Translated to English

The film is quite complex, but it is possible and worth understanding. For those who did not understand this film, it is better to watch it again, but do not watch any under-reviews! Such films are created to develop thinking and push the boundaries of consciousness! Translated to English

You can, of course, sit and dig into the plot with a smart look, but this is some kind of sucking out of your finger. You still don’t get a clear answer to your questions. But it’s worth admitting that it’s not without interest, although the beginning is a bit drawn out. Translated to English

Aesthetically, erotic, mysterious & cinematic. It feels like a stories from different parallel universes mixed up together, so nothing is what it seems to be at first. I still believe I need to rewatch few more times to understand all completely.

When I watched it again, nothing became clearer, but the film is still excellent. Translated to English

One of the best films about Hollywood and vanity. Lynch at his peak. Good food for interpretation. Translated to English

It’s not clear what I watched  a masterpiece for the chosen ones, judging by the ratings 🤯 Translated to English

Bliiiiiiiine… So many enthusiastic people. The film is a real chewing gum. I even found it depressing Why do people get so high from brain rape? For me, a worthwhile film is more intended to bring pleasure. But to unravel some knots tightly tied by the author – alas, this is for an amateur Translated to English

    Watched

A completely understandable film even after one viewing, if you are attentive and have a normal memory Translated to English

Lynch spun it, well, yes. It all starts out as a calm and stupid film about girls' help and attitude, and then it ends up being a psychedelic thriller. An incredible film, after which you sit in a stupor and don’t understand what they did to you and what they "put you through." I was surprised. Translated to English

Looking for clues, you drown even more. So, relax. I liked it, I love puzzles. But you’ll have to solve the Rubik’s cube yourself) Translated to English

What’s happening on the screen is completely surreal, and the less sense it seems, the more interesting it is to watch further. Lynch is in his prime – already experienced and not yet crazy. Badalamenti’s music, as always, is top notch, and the main characters are interesting to watch, and not only because of their sexual tension :) Translated to English

I watched the film 10 times and every time was like the first. Didn’t understand the first time? Look up Lynch’s clues on Wikipedia and look again. A very cool film, for me it is Lynch’s best film. Dream/reality, Dreams/reality, Love/betrayal. In the second half of the film the chronology is broken Translated to English

Red pillow – we are in a dream. Blue box – we are in reality. It was exciting, creepy, funny and passionate. But overall abstract. Oh, how I wish I could see two beautiful lesbians in my dreams. But I will dream of a scary granny who appeared from around the corner of the Twinkie cafe.) Translated to English

I just left the cinema… It’s as if I found a standard with which I will compare all the films on the big screen. It’s some kind of magic – the sound, the picture, the plot – sometimes they fascinate, sometimes they keep you in suspense, sometimes in bewilderment, sometimes they force you to think twice… I’ll go again 100%! Translated to English

    Watched

I watched this film many times. Then I watched interpretations of the film. In the end, nothing became clear. But, for some reason, the film is so fascinating that you just want to watch it again. Translated to English

    Watched

Having re-watched it nine years later, I still stand by my opinion; the film is technically poor (it’s clear that it should have been a series) and the pacing suffers as well, seeming unjustifiably drawn-out; the musical numbers and score as a whole are wonderful, but the atmosphere didn’t work for me, even though I love Lynch. Translated to English

Lynch can speak complexly about simple things. Fortunately, not as confusingly as in "Lost Highway", and with a little bit of strawberry… That must be why "Mulholland Drive" has a lower status: the film is unlikely to surprise fans, but those indifferent to Lynch will be hooked only if their body temperature is 38+. A movie about America, in which something went wrong from the first frame. Everyday mysticism, Hollywood hills, stunningly beautiful people and a picture so juicy that you want to eat it with spoons Translated to English
