Requiem for a Dream: The Book

    About the Author

Hubert Selby Jr. is the author of the novel Requiem for a Dream, which was published in 1978. Selby is known for his raw and unflinching portrayal of the darker sides of human nature and society. His writing style is often characterized by its stream-of-consciousness technique and lack of traditional punctuation, which adds to the intensity and immediacy of his narratives.

    About the Book

Requiem for a Dream is a harrowing exploration of addiction and its devastating effects on individuals and their relationships. The novel follows the lives of four characters: Harry Goldfarb, his mother Sara, his girlfriend Marion Silver, and his friend Tyrone C. Love. Each character is driven by their dreams and desires, but their reliance on drugs leads them down a path of destruction and despair.

    Themes and Style

      • Addiction: The novel delves deeply into the psychological and physical grip of addiction, portraying it as a relentless force that consumes the lives of the characters.

      • Dreams and Desperation: Each character's pursuit of their dreams is marred by desperation, leading to tragic consequences.

      • Writing Style: Selby's unique style, including his use of stream-of-consciousness and minimal punctuation, creates a visceral and immersive reading experience.

    Adaptation and Faithfulness

The film adaptation of Requiem for a Dream, directed by Darren Aronofsky, is largely faithful to the novel. It captures the essence of Selby's work, maintaining the intense and unsettling atmosphere of the book. The film effectively translates the novel's themes of addiction and the pursuit of dreams into a visual medium, preserving the emotional impact and narrative structure of the original text.

    Production

The novel Requiem for a Dream by Hubert Selby Jr. was published in 1978. Aronofsky had been a fan of Selby's work during his school years. In a 2001 interview with the BBC, Aronofsky described Selby's work, saying "Anyone that reads Selby's work can see how intense his world is. He writes the most discordant, angry words that tickle the air with some sweet music around it. It's an unbelievable experience to read his books. I knew that once I made a larger film it would be very difficult to do a project like this. I live my life not wanting to have any regrets, and I knew that Selby was cool, that he's a badass".

This film by Darren Aronofsky is considered the best both in terms of estimates and ratings. But there is an alternative view, where behind the depressing soundtrack and picture there is emptiness. The tape does not reveal new truths. But I liked the idea of addictions. The third act is depressing. Advice

2025. All things considered, it’s a 9. It’s a cool, important film, but one I don’t want to watch again due to its oppressive heaviness. But I’d confidently show it to teenagers.

I’ll mention the soundtrack-it’s one of those things you can listen to without even watching the film. And the acting, too, is incredible: Marlon Wayans , that eternal stoner, and Jennifer Connelly , that roller-skating chick in a white top from the '90s.

I watched it three times in the 2000s. And now, 13 years later, I watched it again. What a heavy and depressing final third here. You couldn’t think of a clearer anti-advertising for drugs and addictions!

Cult black stuff that leaves behind an extremely depressing feeling. I don’t feel like watching it at all, not only because of the depressive mood of the film, but also because of the song "Summer Overture,” which was so boring at the time. By the way, I love the composer who wrote the soundtrack.

Like most of Darren Aronofsky’s films, you won’t want to watch it again, but it’s definitely worth seeing. A powerful interweaving of acting, camera work, music… and oppressive, total hopelessness. The apparent peace when the characters "curl up" and the realization that there can be no happy ending to this story.

This seems to be the most depressing movie in the world. It’s hard to watch this masterful portrayal of human suffering for an hour and a half. I would give it a 9 if it weren’t for the best soundtrack ever created. He works so hard that I can’t. I gradually became depressed while watching it.

A powerful, depressing and very heavy social drama. The acting, the plot and the music are just top notch. Somehow this film passed me by. I watched it just now. It left a strong impression, but I won’t watch it again. It’s too depressing.

This film deserves high marks and is one of the last films that actively explores the topic of drug addiction. One of the most visually colorful experiences, and at the same time tells a story that can be instructive. Aronofsky made perhaps one of his best films, if not the best. I would definitely recommend it for acquaintance. All the best and good cinema

A very difficult film to watch. The point is to show the life of drug addicts. I felt disgusted by this world of drug addicts, hence the conclusion that the director managed to convey the main point, but this feeling after the film… I don’t know what rating to give…

10 years ago I watched it for the first time, today I watched it for the second time. The impression is the same, the feeling of the load is no less. The acting, cinematography, script, soundtrack – everything is brilliant. This film should be shown in school to make people aware of the consequences of their actions.

Four parallel stories, a depressing canvas about the problem of drug addiction with a powerful soundtrack. Aronofsky demonstrates his unique ability to create sensitive cinema, riding the wave of desperate and self-destructive films of the end of the millennium.
