Manga “Super Lovers” (basis for “More Than Lovers”)

Source: the Japanese manga Super Lovers, later adapted into an anime TV series.

    Author and publication

      • Author: Miyako Abe — the mangaka who created the original story.

      • Genre/demographic: shōnen-ai / romance drama, slice of life.

      • Publication: serialized in Japan under Kadokawa’s Emerald line; collected volumes are ongoing.

    What the manga is about

The story begins with Haru spending summer in Canada, where he meets Ren, a boy adopted by Haru’s mother. Ren is difficult and guarded, and Haru feels he must “civilize” him before summer ends. As they spend more time together, their bond improves, and the manga continues beyond that summer into their life back in Japan, focusing on changing family ties, cohabitation, and increasingly complicated feelings and conflicts.

How closely the anime follows the manga

      • Overall: the adaptation keeps the main plot beats and the core relationship arc from the manga.

      • Typical adaptation changes: some scenes are condensed or rearranged for runtime, while day-to-day and psychological nuances are generally fuller in the manga.

      • Tone and emphasis: the manga tends to linger more on internal motives and relationship nuances; the anime more often highlights the primary storyline and major dramatic moments.
