The Comic Book Behind "Eternals" (2021)

    About the Comic

The film "Eternals" is based on the comic book series created by Jack Kirby. The series was first published by Marvel Comics in 1976. The story introduces a race of immortal beings known as the Eternals, who were created by the Celestials, a group of powerful cosmic entities. The Eternals are tasked with protecting Earth from their evil counterparts, the Deviants.

    Author: Jack Kirby

Jack Kirby was a legendary comic book artist and writer, often referred to as the "King of Comics." He co-created many iconic characters and series for both Marvel and DC Comics, including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the New Gods. Kirby's work on "Eternals" is noted for its grand cosmic themes and imaginative storytelling.

    Film's Faithfulness to the Comic

The film adaptation of "Eternals" takes inspiration from Kirby's original work but also introduces new elements and characters to fit the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the core concept of the Eternals and their mission remains intact, the film expands on the characters' backgrounds and relationships, offering a modern interpretation of Kirby's vision.

    Key Differences

      • Character Development: The film provides more depth to the characters, exploring their personal struggles and interactions in a way that the original comic did not.

      • Storyline Adjustments: Certain plot points and character arcs have been adjusted to align with the broader narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

      • Visual Style: While Kirby's artwork is iconic, the film uses modern visual effects to bring the cosmic elements of the story to life.

Overall, the film "Eternals" pays homage to Jack Kirby's original comic while also making necessary adaptations to appeal to contemporary audiences and fit within the existing Marvel film framework.

    FAQ

    What is “Eternals” about?

“Eternals” is a Marvel Cinematic Universe film about a group of immortal beings who have secretly lived on Earth for millennia, protecting humanity from the Deviants, before a new global threat and internal divisions force them into action.

Do I need to watch other Marvel movies before “Eternals”?

Not strictly. The movie works as a standalone introduction to new characters, though familiarity with the broader MCU helps you catch references and understand the larger context.

Who are the Eternals in the film?

The Eternals are powerful, long-lived protectors created by cosmic beings. They operate as a team, but each has a distinct personality, worldview, and relationship with humanity.

    Who are the Deviants?

The Deviants are the Eternals’ ancient enemies—dangerous creatures that threaten humanity. In the film, their role expands beyond simple monsters into a larger cosmic design.

Why didn’t the Eternals intervene in earlier major MCU events?

They followed a rule to intervene only when Deviants appeared. The film also suggests deeper reasons—moral ambiguity, division within the team, and differing belief in their mission.

What themes does “Eternals” explore beyond action?

It explores faith and purpose, the cost of immortality, free will, responsibility toward humanity, love and loss, and whether duty should outweigh conscience.

Who directed the film, and what stands out about its direction?

The director is Chloé Zhao. The film stands out for a more contemplative pace, strong emphasis on natural locations and vistas, and a focus on character conflict alongside large-scale mythology.

Is the film original or based on comics?

The movie is based on Marvel’s Eternals comics created by Jack Kirby, but it significantly reworks lore details and character backstories to fit the MCU.

Does “Eternals” have post-credits scenes, and should I stay?

Yes—there are post-credits scenes. They broaden the MCU’s cosmic storyline and tease future connections, so franchise fans should stay.

Why is the film considered more ‘cosmic’ and ‘mythic’ than many other MCU entries?

It centers on ancient cosmic beings, the origins of civilizations, and universe-scale processes beyond typical street-level or Earth-focused superhero stories. Visually and narratively, it leans into legend, symbolism, and a ‘godlike’ perspective.

Why are reactions to the film mixed, and who tends to like it more?

Some viewers expected a faster, more conventional MCU ride, while the film juggles many characters, a slower pace, and more philosophical beats. It tends to appeal more to audiences interested in cosmic lore, ensemble drama, and a different MCU tone.

    Who wrote “Eternals”?

The screenplay was written by Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo.

Is “Eternals” connected to other Marvel cosmic stories from the comics?

Yes. In the comics, the Eternals tie into Marvel’s broader cosmic concepts. Some themes were developed by various creators, including Jim Starlin, though the movie is not a direct adaptation of a specific Starlin storyline.

    Production

In April 2015, Marvel Television was working with screenwriter John Ridley to craft a new television series for ABC, "reinventing" an existing Marvel Comics character or property. This was revealed years later to be the Eternals, a race of long-lived superheroes created by Jack Kirby. Ridley said he was trying to make a superhero series that viewers had not seen before, differentiating it from Marvel's other projects, and said his approach would have been a "really weird story" that may not have been entertaining for everyone. It ultimately did not move forward with Ridley, and Marvel Television was folded into Marvel Studios in December 2019.

Excellent tedium. After all, not all comic book blockbusters need two and a half hours of minimal action and depressing, suffering characters. The film feels like a monument to exaggerated inclusivity-not only can you study geography from the casting list, but of course there has to be a gay kiss and even a deaf-mute. Forget it.

Still, it looks good after an hour of getting used to a superhero with bright characters. The scale is unprecedented. Beautiful landscapes and scenes – through the roof. And a dozen heroes are remembered in the end, and the monsters cease to seem stupid. In short, I liked it. Unusual, fresh Marvel.

    Translated to English

The brightest unhurried contemplative almost Buddhist movie about the problem of eternal life and the significance of the actions of ordinary people. YES, there are two men kissing, but the film is not about that. It is a pity that the experience did not go to the fans, and non-fans did not even dare to watch. It looks like a piece of goods without a continuation.

It seemed to me that the film differs from the rest of the MCU in that it is many times less of this blockbuster and more serious in the story. Almost all the characters are cool and well developed, although the questions remain, the plot is quite interesting and almost logical, there is enough humor.

It’s time to get acquainted with the art-house marvel-shmarvel. Chloe Zhao is the mother of mothers, but in the studio project, she seems to be confused, like Travolta in that meme.

They survived, in the previous phases the avengers were people (not counting Thor). Now in a new phase, I already forgot which one, the avengers have become eternal. All rolled into a fairy tale.

It’s immediately obvious that this film wasn’t made by blockbuster fans. It’s more of a thought-provoking film. That doesn’t work so well in the context of larger projects, especially film adaptations. Yes, the scope is impressive and there’s a plot, but it’s not on the level of The Avengers.

Okay, not as bad as I expected. But it’s boring and there are a lot of inconsistencies.

    Translated to English

It’s just the bottom. Not only the worst Marvel movie, but also the worst superhero movie of recent years in general. Dull, poorly done, if you love Marvel then this movie will disappoint you for sure, because it’s a different style that doesn’t fit in the MCU. And also logical holes, yes. Heap!

An atypically beautiful film from the Marvel universe, in which the most juicy is at the end. The first hour and a half is a very monotonous homogeneous mess of events, but then everything changes dramatically. And of course 2 scenes after the credits, don’t miss them.

Infinitely drawn-out nonsense to a mournful music. The director obviously for a second (forever) forgot what she was filming. But a great sleeping pill, I recommend.

Surprisingly normal film, in some places tightened – but clearly does not deserve such low ratings. And against the background of «Venom 2» – so generally a masterpiece)

Nudyatina. The film’s title is just right for the timing and sluggish storytelling. The new phase of Marvel takes on new dimensions, which makes the showdown of the Avengers seem like a children’s quarrel in the sandbox, but the films themselves become smaller: uninteresting, boring and gray.

Too hyped that the director is «cool» Chloe Zhao, but I will say that the world of «The Eternals» is not much more beautiful than Wakanda or the world of the Amazons in DC. I was bored, but the wonderful actors smoothed out the corners, I couldn’t take my eyes off them

A weak connection to the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe. And you can generally forget about chronology in dialogues – the characters in the film seem to name time intervals of events at random.

    Translated to English

    Watched

I don’t know if the screen in the cinema was terrible or the film was like that, but it was very dark, almost nothing could be seen, it was simply impossible to watch the film for the first hour and a half, the scenes after the credits were much more interesting than the film itself, it’s a pity that Marvel was so crap

    Translated to English

    Watched

According to the first trailer, the film did not promise an epic level of the Avengers. And so it turned out. The plot is common in the MCU. The director, however, managed to cope with that abyss of the main characters and endow them with some kind of chemistry. It turned out better than Widow and Shang-Chi, but this is not an achievement.

Pretty good film, surprisingly for Marvel quality plot, not without cliches of course but not really spoiling the impression, the only thing I didn’t like was the scenes after the credits (only diehard comic book fans will understand them) and very dark action scenes

Zhao’s contribution is a drop in the ocean. Into the deep marketing industrial sea. Although the film is very beautiful, but the script for it can only be beaten on the head by the creators. Most of the characters are beautiful dummies. It’s a pity, there were all the makings for something interesting, but they didn’t screw it up.

With such eternal ones, how has humanity not yet perished in the Stone Age? Of course, I did not expect any dramaturgy or semantic load from such a film.
