The film was announced in December 2017, then untitled, with James Gunn as a producer, his brother Brian and cousin Mark writing the script, and David Yarovesky directing; The H Collective was fully financing, and producing with James Gunn's Troll Court Entertainment banner. In March 2018, Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Meredith Hagner and Matt Jones were cast. Gunn was set to appear on a panel to discuss the project at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018, but his appearance was canceled after news broke that Disney had fired Gunn as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) due to offensive tweets; Gunn would later be reinstated by that October, with his return publicly revealed in March 2019.

Evil Superman Origin: The idea is good, but the implementation is full of genre cliches
Another movie, the authors of which decided that motivation is an atavism and, well, fuck it. Increasingly, this approach is taken by horror writers. I strongly disagree with this, but for the rest – thumbs up, as they say. Atmospheric, the killings are brutally inventive, the effects are frighteningly good
I was taken in by the trailer and the poster – I liked the villain’s costume. But in the end, it was a complete disappointment. The film is very weak and incoherent. In fact, a set of a whole series of cliches, and also poorly sewn.
A great «what if Superman was bad» idea was ruined by a shaky camera, silly characters, and mediocre performances by most of the cast. We have to admit that there were some super beautiful shots. All horror is about showing human mutilation. Dumb.
Oh, that’s too bad. The best thing about the movie is the scene before the credits.
