Wives and Daughters: An Overview of the Book

    About the Book

Wives and Daughters is a novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell. It was first published in serial form in the magazine Cornhill Magazine from August 1864 to January 1866. Unfortunately, Gaskell passed away before she could complete the novel, but it remains one of her most beloved works.

    Plot Summary

The novel is set in the English countryside and follows the life of Molly Gibson, the daughter of a widowed doctor. The story explores themes of family, social class, and personal growth as Molly navigates the complexities of relationships and societal expectations. The arrival of a new stepmother and stepsister introduces new dynamics and challenges into Molly's life, leading to a rich tapestry of interpersonal drama and development.

    Author: Elizabeth Gaskell

Elizabeth Gaskell was a prominent English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is known for her detailed and realistic portrayals of society and her ability to weave intricate narratives that explore the human condition. Her other notable works include North and South and Cranford.

Adaptation and Faithfulness to the Book

The 1999 television adaptation of Wives and Daughters is generally considered to be a faithful representation of Gaskell's novel. The series captures the essence of the characters and the social intricacies depicted in the book. While some minor changes and omissions were made for the sake of the adaptation, the core themes and narrative structure remain true to Gaskell's original work.

    Production

Davies and Birtwistle collaborated on the BBC's television popular adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in 1995. Following that success the BBC 'effectively told the duo they could adapt any book they wished', leading to Wives and Daughters. Birtwhistle described Gaskell's novel as 'strong, direct and passionate' and this offered 'the necessary elements for a popular classic TV drama'.
