The Book Behind the Film "Silk Road" (2021)

    About the Book

The film "Silk Road" is based on the book American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road by David Kushner. This non-fiction book delves into the true story of Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the infamous online black market known as Silk Road. The book provides a detailed account of Ulbricht's rise and fall, exploring the complexities of his character and the impact of his creation on the world of cybercrime.

    About the Author

David Kushner is a well-known journalist and author, recognized for his work in exploring the intersection of technology and culture. His writing often focuses on the darker sides of the digital world, and he has contributed to numerous publications, including Rolling Stone and Wired.

    Film Adaptation

The film adaptation, directed by Tiller Russell, attempts to capture the essence of Kushner's book by focusing on the dramatic and thrilling aspects of the story. While the film takes some creative liberties for cinematic purposes, it remains largely faithful to the book's narrative, highlighting the key events and characters involved in the Silk Road saga.

    Key Differences

      • The film condenses certain events and characters to fit the runtime, which may lead to a simplified portrayal of complex situations described in the book.

      • Some character motivations and backstories are altered or omitted to enhance the film's dramatic tension.

Overall, the film "Silk Road" provides a compelling visual representation of David Kushner's book, offering audiences a glimpse into the fascinating and dangerous world of the Silk Road.

    Production

In January 2019, it was announced Jason Clarke and Nick Robinson had joined the cast of the film, with Tiller Russell directing from a screenplay he wrote. In May 2019, Cole Sprouse, Darrell Britt-Gibson and Jimmi Simpson joined the cast of the film. In June 2019, Paul Walter Hauser, Katie Aselton and Lexi Rabe joined the cast of the film. That same month, Daniel David Stewart joined the cast of the film, replacing Sprouse.

Well, not a fountain. On this topic, it was possible to shoot deeper and more interesting.

A pro hacker in a hoodie against an old school cop and cyber cops. Darknet, silk road sales $14-15 million/year. It’s already worth watching

The film is not very cinematic, but also documentary editing techniques from the 00s – they drive the last nail into the coffin of the visual part. Better watch Fincher

A terribly underrated adaptation of a real, interesting story about an Internet scam and a guy who wanted to change the world. The film is shot unexpectedly well – the shooting is pleasant, the actors play confidently, good music complements the atmosphere. It is really interesting to watch, you don’t get distracted.

In spirit it resembles "The Social Network", only a little simpler, but for its budget it is really worthy. Cons? Perhaps the lack of famous actors and a weak budget. The Russian title "Antisocial Network" is unfortunate – in the original the film is called "Silk Road", and this is much more accurate. But here is a question for the localizers.

Without embellishment: the film is worth watching and deserves a rating much higher than it is given.
