The Book Behind "The Haunting of Bly Manor"

    About the Book

The series "The Haunting of Bly Manor" is based on the novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. This classic ghost story was first published in 1898 and has since become one of the most famous works in the genre of supernatural fiction.

    Author: Henry James

Henry James was an American-British author known for his contributions to 19th-century literature. His works often explore themes of consciousness, perception, and morality. The Turn of the Screw is one of his most analyzed and debated stories, particularly for its ambiguous narrative and psychological depth.

    Correspondence to the Book

The series "The Haunting of Bly Manor" takes inspiration from The Turn of the Screw but expands upon the original story. While the novella focuses on the experiences of a governess who becomes convinced that the estate she works at is haunted, the series introduces new characters and subplots, providing a broader exploration of themes such as love, loss, and memory.

      • The novella is primarily a psychological thriller with a focus on the governess's perspective, leaving much to the reader's interpretation.

      • The series, while maintaining the core elements of the ghost story, adds depth by exploring the backstories of various characters and the history of the Bly estate.

      • While the novella is set in the Victorian era, the series adapts the setting to a more modern context, allowing for contemporary storytelling techniques and themes.

Overall, "The Haunting of Bly Manor" remains true to the spirit of Henry James's work, while also offering a fresh take that appeals to modern audiences.

    Production

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in October 2018, on the topic of The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan said, "I don't want to speculate too much about season two until Netflix, Paramount and Amblin let us know if they want one. What I will say, though, is that as far as I've ever been concerned with this, the story of the Crain family is told. It's done."

The narrative structure of the fifth episode is very chaotic, but everything will be explained at the end. In the sixth episode they also give out a twist, and in the finale they add a cliffhanger. The series is not bad, but there is still too much talk. And even "we are not rockers, we are not punks" does not save us from the boredom that drives us to sleep.

A sweet, kind story with a modern twist. Of course, she’s no longer on the same level as The Haunting of Hill House. And it’s not so scary to watch anymore. Rather sad. The film has become a standard drama with a modern twist.

Undoubtedly a beautiful and romantic fantasy horror, where the pace of the narrative is very let down. Compared to The Haunting of Hill House, IMHO it’s a cut above. The main role is played by the girl from the poster of "Ghosts…". There are 4 other actors from there. Lots of deviant love. A lot of words. 7.5

Judging by the rating, the series is expected to surprise with something. But already in the third episode the heroine goes into the garden at night. So far, the characters themselves, especially the children, are intriguing here.

It could have been made into a film format rather than a series. A little long. But in general, it’s very good, sometimes scary)

Not as impressive or intense as the first season. But still infinitely tender. And if the first was about the blood family, then the second is about the one that we find ourselves. The only negative is that I’m tired of the film adaptations of The Turn of the Screw, even if they are strongly inspired by them.

I thought for a long time about what comment to give. And someone here used the word "gentle." Yes, this series is "infinitely tender." Despite such a serious drama, everything here is very soft and gentle: from the dialogues and melody to the manifestation of emotions between the characters. I really got into the story, which is very rare.

The new series isn’t better than The Haunting of Hill House, but it’s decent. The concept of the otherworldly is completely different here, but this time the drama weighs even more heavily on the horror, which is given a very tiny place here. Excellent fantasy, a little about ghosts and a lot about love.

A minimum of mysticism, a maximum of static, conversations, conversations and more conversations. Yes, in their way, directors usually reveal characters, usually … but not here. By episode 2, the whole concept becomes clear. The soap in which the doppelgänger of the Ghost of Hill House drowned. beautiful main actress

There is much more drama in "Bly" than in "The Hills", and there is noticeably less nervous tension. I expected something different, but I’m still pleased with the result, because Flanagan doesn’t follow a proven pattern, but tries something new. Respect.

Different series and different emotions, the continuation turned out better (in my opinion), but not ideal. A good story that keeps the viewer interested until the end. I was glad to see the actors from the first season, but here they looked, alas, ridiculous. And of course splendid Flora

Autumn, neo-gothic, super-cool, less intense than the first, but very romantic and tender. Horror and romance seem impossible to combine, but this director succeeded the second time. I hope there will be a third one.
