The Real Story Behind "Thirteen Lives"
The Tham Luang Cave Rescue
The film "Thirteen Lives" is based on the real-life events of the Tham Luang cave rescue, which took place in June and July 2018 in Thailand. This dramatic rescue operation captured the world's attention as it involved the successful extraction of twelve boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave system.
The Incident
On June 23, 2018, a junior soccer team, known as the Wild Boars, consisting of twelve boys aged between 11 and 16, along with their 25-year-old assistant coach, entered the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in the Chiang Rai Province of northern Thailand. They became trapped inside the cave due to sudden and heavy rainfall, which flooded the cave system and blocked their way out.
The Rescue Operation
The rescue operation was a massive international effort that involved more than 10,000 people, including divers, rescue workers, and volunteers from around the world. The operation was led by the Thai Navy SEALs and included expert cave divers from various countries.
- Initial Search: The search for the boys began immediately, but the rising water levels and complex cave system made it extremely challenging.
- Discovery: After nine days, on July 2, British divers discovered the boys and their coach alive on an elevated rock about 4 kilometers from the cave entrance.
- Rescue Plan: The rescue plan involved teaching the boys basic diving skills to navigate the flooded passages. The operation was risky due to the narrow and submerged sections of the cave.
- Successful Rescue: The rescue took place over three days, from July 8 to July 10, 2018. All twelve boys and their coach were successfully brought out of the cave.
Challenges and Risks
The rescue operation faced numerous challenges, including the risk of further flooding, low visibility, and the boys' lack of diving experience. Tragically, a former Thai Navy SEAL, Saman Kunan, lost his life during the operation while delivering supplies to the trapped group.
Accuracy of the Film
The film "Thirteen Lives" aims to provide an accurate portrayal of the events surrounding the Tham Luang cave rescue. Directed by Ron Howard, the movie focuses on the international collaboration and the bravery of the rescuers. The film features performances by actors such as Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton, who portray key figures in the rescue operation.
The film strives to remain faithful to the real events, highlighting the technical challenges and emotional intensity of the rescue. It captures the spirit of cooperation and determination that defined the operation, while also paying tribute to the courage and resilience of both the rescuers and the boys.

Total immersion in cinema. Don’t forget to breathe while watching. The level of involvement is high, you sincerely want to worry about the characters. Luckily they turned out very bright. Not an ounce of hackwork on the part of the actors.

The entire timing flew by like a click. The excitement did not leave until the very end. The story is simple and somewhat formulaic, but, in my opinion, the film did an excellent job.

That’s what ordinary British people do – they save lives, they don’t destroy them. Honor and praise to them! Worthy film adaptation of the real feat of divers and … anesthetics. I watched the documentary without knowing the outcome of the mission, and it was just wow. There are no special features in a feature film, and the stars have nothing to play. 8.5

The story is about a long rescue operation of 12 boys and a coach from a flooded cave. Watching the rescue is exciting. The film is closer to a documentary, which is why you forget about the cast.

It could have been a little more tension, even enough to not slide into Hollywood and a standard disaster movie, on the other hand, there is earthiness and realism here. Howard was always better at drama.

The hardest thing is that this is based on real events and almost everything was conveyed exactly as it was. Until the end of the film, it was not known what the result would be. The film is definitely worth watching!

Powerful movie. I kept thinking that an uninteresting moment would definitely come, and I would watch the film on rewind; before watching, I thought that this was an attempt at a copy of "The Descent" in 2005, but the moment to rewind never came.

Great movie. Definitely recommended. Keeps you in suspense from the 10th minute until the end… when you understand why the anesthesiologist is there – your head explodes… Holds you as tightly as the first "Speed" did when you understand that the events are real – goosebumps… So far the best in 2022.

Haven’t checked. And don’t want to look. It’s not bad, but it’s very boring.

A balanced version of the film that combines "filmed on real events" and the artistic component of the film.

A chamber disaster film of good quality. Nothing highly artistic, just a real story through the eyes of filmmakers. Mortensen and Farrell steal the show – I wouldn’t watch it without them.
Watched
Very boring. I saw a documentary about this situation – they told a very exciting story in an hour. And here is 2:30 of the timing of the rescue process, very boring, without any intrigue. Seems like an incredibly long storyline.

Excellent film. The fact that the film is based on real events is appealing. The film is about the unity of people. It is hard to imagine what successes humanity would have achieved if it were united. But for now, we have what we have. I do not recommend it to claustrophobes. It was nice to see Farrell, he is really on fire this year.

The story of a football team rescued from a flooded cave by divers. I was amazed by the ingenious plan and the time it took to "transport" the guys underwater, my respects! Unfortunately, it lacked drive, although overall it was superb. 6.5 out of 10.

A true story about a unique rescue operation. Aragorn will try to save the little ones again)) it’s a joke! Cool movie!

Based on a true story about a youth football team that, along with its coach, was locked in a cave, as the annual rainy season began prematurely in Thailand.

Quite bearable actually. A feature film that is based on a true story, and even with your favorite actors. I wasn’t upset that I saw it, but don’t expect a perfect movie. It just turned out well, without special effects and something "wow", it resembles any other rescue. movie

good movie based on real events. The film was very tense when the action took place in caves under water. In general, the film is top, I advise.

I remember this story. I especially remember her as a srach, who spread the "genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist" Elon Musk. It’s a good movie, but only once. I think that such films are necessary so that some australopithecines do not forget about the importance of human life.
