In the Pride Lands of Tanzania after the events of The Lion King (2019), Rafiki the mandrill tells the origin story of two lions, Mufasa and Taka, to Kiara—the granddaughter of Mufasa and daughter of Simba and Nala. The story follows the orphan Mufasa, who is befriended by the young prince Taka and adopted by Taka's family; the pair become as close as brothers. Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog add color commentary.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” is a 2024 American animated adventure film that expands the Lion King universe and focuses on Mufasa’s backstory.
Is it a sequel to The Lion King or a prequel?
Primarily, it’s a prequel: it explores how Mufasa rose to his role and reputation, potentially framed by events set later in the timeline.
Who directed “Mufasa: The Lion King”?
The film was directed by Barry Jenkins.
Who wrote the screenplay?
The screenplay was written by Jeff Nathanson.
What is the story about (spoiler-free)?
The film follows Mufasa’s journey—how his character, leadership, and key relationships were shaped, and what trials led him to become a legend of the Pride Lands.
Do I need to watch previous films to understand it?
Generally, no—the story is designed to be accessible for newcomers. However, knowing The Lion King adds context and emotional resonance.
Is it live-action or animated?
It’s an animated film with a photorealistic visual style, in line with the franchise’s modern CGI approach.
Does the movie include songs and musical numbers?
Yes—the franchise traditionally leans on music, so you can expect songs and musical set pieces that support emotion and character development.
Is it connected to the 1994 classic The Lion King?
Yes. It’s part of the same mythology, expanding the familiar world and deepening Mufasa’s backstory while building on the franchise’s core themes.
Does the version of Mufasa voiced by James Earl Jones appear?
The film focuses on an earlier period of Mufasa’s life, so the emphasis is on a new take on the character. Still, Mufasa’s legacy in the classic films associated with James Earl Jones remains a key part of the franchise’s cultural context.
Who is the movie for?
It’s a family adventure film aimed at a broad audience—kids, parents, and Lion King fans curious about the saga’s origins.

Expect a balance: stories like this typically combine serious themes of growth and responsibility with lighter comedic moments for family viewing.
Are there scenes that could scare young kids?
As with The Lion King, there may be intense moments involving danger and conflict. More sensitive kids might benefit from watching with an adult.
What themes does the story emphasize?
Core themes typically include leadership, choices, loyalty, the cost of power, family, and finding one’s place—through trials that shape a future ruler.
Is it connected to other franchise spin-offs?
It expands the Lion King universe but works as a standalone origin story for Mufasa. Any direct overlaps depend on specific plot choices.

I’ll watch the prequel, a sidequel to the film that was a remake of one of the most beloved children’s cartoons from the 90s.

The main problem for me in this cartoon is the retcon. Yes, it turns out that Mufasa and Scar are not siblings, which is basically the reason for their feud in the original cartoon. But we know that no one has ever said anything like that before this cartoon.
And so the story of origin, the appearance of Scar’s scar, the first acquaintance with many of the characters, the expressions on the lions' faces became more diverse, there is a lot of interesting action here, well, and the whole story is Rafiki’s story, and it is listened to, including Timon and Pumbaa, who periodically joke, which is nice.
The cartoon is not bad, well drawn, with a standard plot about how two people were friends and then had a fight towards the end, but I repeat, all this is an optional addition to the original cartoon.

Well, I don’t like this graphics. At times it’s really bad and far from realism. And if that’s the case, then why all this? And I’m not a racist, but all the lions look the same. But they tried with the script – a lot of competent fan service, beautiful intersections with the original story. If they had made it in the format of a regular cartoon – it would have been eights

A colorful prequel to the sequel to the story of a lion’s fate, with love and betrayal. Why Barry Jenkins ended up as a director is a mystery. The only thing that could interest him here was working with dark-skinned brothers for the voice acting.
The plot is both original and not. Mufasa, Sarabi, Scar, Rafiki and Zazu’s origin. Timon, Pumbaa, Simba and Nala are minimal. It’s a bit of a pity, because Pumbaa’s jokes here are rare, but to the point.
Disney songs are both a plus and a minus. In "Mulan" there were none, and already by the feeling something is completely wrong. But here it turned out not only beautifully, but also musically. The lions still don’t have penises, but we’ll survive this unpleasantness. The picture of the film is wonderful. Nature and animals are cool, we love it.

A worthy prequel, telling the story of the formation of Mufasa and Scar. Even knowing how it all ends, you can’t help but worry – the heroes get into such troubles that even white racists in Harlem couldn’t dream of. But all these songs, as usual, irritate me, because they already smell quite a bit of Bollywood.

In terms of the plot, the film did not surprise in any way, but this is an inherent "disease" of all prequels. But I was absolutely delighted with the picture! The drawing of the characters is close to ideal and for a while even the cat was fooled. Usually he ignores my "sitting" in front of the TV, but here he was "stuck" to the screen.
Watched
A standard Disney cartoon, which has nothing to praise, but I don’t want to criticize. But Pumbaa has long deserved a solo project – it will be a cannon!

Disney managed to create not just a prequel, but an independent story that is not inferior to the original. For everyone who wants to return to the world of the savannah and find out where it all began.

Excellent prequel/sequel 2in1. I recommend watching only on a 4K TV, as this is a magnificent visual feast of Disney!!! Views of African nature, snow-capped mountains, picturesque sunsets, green plains, turbulent rivers… Everything down to the smallest detail, a full effect of presence.

CGI isn’t always the best choice for storytelling. The over-photorealism has stifled emotion, leaving characters like Simba and Mufasa unable to express the same vivid emotions as their animated counterparts in the 1994 original due to their animalistic realism.
Watched
It’s disgusting when it comes to the songs; the damn localizers even redid them. In my opinion, all these musicals are best left alone; subtitles are provided for those who want them. You have to constantly fast-forward to keep your ears from leaking. It’s annoying, it interferes with enjoying the well-made visuals.

An interesting film about true friendship and adventures that happened to the orphaned Mufasa. I recently watched the film and was very delighted.
Quite a good movie. Not a masterpiece, of course, but I liked it more, unlike the first film, where everything was copied "stupidly one-to-one" and nothing new was brought.

An interesting addition to the pride story. The grandchildren liked the beautiful animation, but I still think that classic cartoons are more soulful.

Good offer. With very good graphics. Cool plot. Relationships between characters. The only thing I didn’t like was a bit of a fairy tale, although this can be forgiven considering that this is a cartoon for children

It’s drawn very beautifully! But, as usual lately, the logic is terribly lame
