The script was originally set in The Hamptons, a wealthy enclave in New York, but was transferred to London when Allen found financing for the film there. The film was partly funded by BBC Films, which required that he make the film in the UK with largely local cast and crew. In an interview with The Guardian, Allen explained that he was allowed "the same kind of creative liberal attitude that I'm used to", in London. He complained that the American studio system was not interested in making small films: "They only want these $100 million pictures that make $500m." A further change was required when Kate Winslet, who was supposed to play the part of Nola Rice, resigned a week before filming was scheduled to begin. Scarlett Johansson was offered the part, and accepted, but the character had to be re-written as an American. According to Allen, "It was not a problem...It took about an hour."

Johansson couldn’t be more beautiful. Rhys Meyers played a wonderful man rushing around in search of the right way out. The ending is amazing. Woody Allen is still a genius. Well, Sherlock’s brother in the ping-pong episode was a nice addition. 8/10

In my opinion, it has little in common with Crime and Punishment: a completely different motive, a different type of hero. Only the episode with the appearance of spirits polemicizes with Dostoevsky; perhaps the film was made for its sake. It looks interesting, especially the analogy of the "ball-ring", but the conclusion about life as a game of chance is extremely joyless.

To my shame, I just watched this Woody Allen film for the first time today. Of course, this is all good and blah blah blah, but – motherfucker – how beautiful Scarlett is here! So much so that you just don’t care what’s going on around you

Having the undoubted merit of a good script and actors, the film did not inspire delight in its execution. the story seems underdeveloped, not hitting at full strength. Lacks completeness. There is only a slight bitterness of the ending, and a feeling of injustice. The first half is drawn out.

Woody Allen read a lot of Dostoevsky and decided to film his version of "crime and punishment." It turned out to be an interesting and memorable film, well written and with a charming Scarlett Johansson. It’s a pleasure to watch. (7/10)

Having overcome his zenith of fame, the tennis player tries to arrange his life. And on the way to this goal he meets two beautiful ladies – a smart girl and just the daughter of his mother’s friend, with whom it is boring in bed, and the fatal Nola, a sensual and temperamental lady, with whom it is cool to have fun, but it is difficult to build life priorities. Woody Allen changed the motives of crime and punishment and mentioned Dostoevsky in vain. You never know where the ball will fall and where you can find your happiness. Good acting of the main actors. Scarlett is beautiful. I recommend you to get acquainted

Jesus, what kind of characters does Allen have in a good half of his films – non-stop talking heads without interesting backgrounds, highlights, or at least not trivial characters / motivations.
