Day of Wrath: The Book Behind the Film

    About the Book

The film "Day of Wrath" is based on the play Anne Pedersdotter by Hans Wiers-Jenssen. The play, written in 1908, is a historical drama that explores themes of witchcraft, love, and societal norms in 16th-century Norway. It delves into the life of Anne Pedersdotter, a woman accused of witchcraft, and the ensuing moral and emotional turmoil.

    About the Author

Hans Wiers-Jenssen was a Norwegian playwright and novelist known for his works that often depicted historical and cultural themes. His play Anne Pedersdotter is one of his most notable works, reflecting his interest in the complexities of human nature and societal pressures.

    Film Adaptation

The film adaptation by Carl Theodor Dreyer remains largely faithful to the original play. Dreyer's interpretation captures the intense emotional and psychological depth of the characters, staying true to the play's exploration of themes such as fear, love, and the supernatural. The film's adherence to the source material is evident in its portrayal of the historical setting and the moral dilemmas faced by the characters.

    Production

Day of Wrath was Dreyer's first film since Vampyr (1932). He had spent the previous eleven years working as a journalist and unsuccessfully attempting to launch such film projects as an adaptation of Madame Bovary, a documentary on Africa and a film about Mary Stuart.

A powerful, minimalist, but at the same time heavy anti-women statement by Dreyer about faith. You catch yourself thinking how much in The Handmaid’s Tale comes from the time and environment shown here, and, of course, from the hypocritical covering with Scripture of one’s thirst for evil and one’s hardness of heart.

Despite Dreyer’s own denial, it is impossible to watch this film without looking back at the year it was released. Humanity has always found and continues to find "witches." And at the heart of such a hunt is always a thirst for power combined with a lack of love or compassion.

Thoughts materialize, both good and bad. Therefore, you need to watch your thoughts and think about where your desires lead. 'A good person brings out good things from a good treasure, and an evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure.' (Matthew 12-35)
