Day of Wrath was Dreyer's first film since Vampyr (1932). He had spent the previous eleven years working as a journalist and unsuccessfully attempting to launch such film projects as an adaptation of Madame Bovary, a documentary on Africa and a film about Mary Stuart.

The film adaptation by Carl Theodor Dreyer remains largely faithful to the original play. Dreyer's interpretation captures the intense emotional and psychological depth of the characters, staying true to the play's exploration of themes such as fear, love, and the supernatural. A powerful, minimalist, but at the same time heavy anti-women statement by Dreyer about faith. You catch yourself thinking how much in The Handmaid’s Tale comes from the time and environment shown here, and, of course, from the hypocritical covering with Scripture of one’s thirst for evil and one’s hardness of heart.
Watched
Despite Dreyer’s own denial, it is impossible to watch this film without looking back at the year it was released. Humanity has always found and continues to find "witches." And at the heart of such a hunt is always a thirst for power combined with a lack of love or compassion.
