Shrek the Halls: The Book Behind the Animation

    About the Book

The animated short film "Shrek the Halls" is inspired by the beloved children's book Shrek! written by William Steig. Published in 1990, the book introduces readers to the character of Shrek, a green ogre who embarks on a journey to find his place in the world. The story is filled with humor, adventure, and a unique take on the traditional fairy tale genre.

    About the Author

William Steig was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and writer of children's books. Known for his distinctive style and wit, Steig's work has captivated audiences for decades. His book Shrek! is one of his most famous works, leading to the creation of the popular Shrek film series.

    Adaptation and Faithfulness

While "Shrek the Halls" is a holiday-themed short film, it draws inspiration from the world and characters created by William Steig in his book Shrek!. The film expands on the universe established in the original book, bringing in new elements and characters that were not present in Steig's work. Although the short film takes creative liberties, it maintains the spirit and humor of the original story, capturing the essence of Shrek's character and his adventures.

    Production

Shrek the Halls was produced by DreamWorks Animation and PDI/DreamWorks. David Ian Salter and Mark Baldo directed the special during the pre production, but they were later replaced by Gary Trousdale. The film was produced by Teresa Cheng, Gina Shay and Aron Warner and was written by Bill Riling, Theresa Cullen, Gary Trousdale and Sean Bishop.

This is one of those "Christmas cartoons" that does everything right. The mood of the original is respected, the actors are all in place, and it also gives a good New Year’s story.

A similar concept – themed stories from characters – worked better in the Halloween special. Here they are too short. But for family viewing on the eve of a holiday, it’s enough for once. 6.5
