    The Pillars of the Earth

    About the Book

The Pillars of the Earth is a historical novel written by Ken Follett. Published in 1989, the book is set in 12th-century England and revolves around the construction of a cathedral in the fictional town of Kingsbridge. The novel explores themes of ambition, love, and power, weaving together the lives of several characters as they navigate the social and political challenges of the time.

    Author

Ken Follett is a renowned Welsh author known for his thrillers and historical novels. With a career spanning several decades, Follett has sold over 160 million copies of his works worldwide. The Pillars of the Earth is one of his most acclaimed novels, praised for its detailed historical setting and complex character development.

    Adaptation and Faithfulness

The 2010 television adaptation of The Pillars of the Earth attempts to capture the essence of Ken Follett's novel. While the series follows the main plot and characters, certain elements and subplots are altered or condensed to fit the format of a limited series. The adaptation strives to maintain the novel's core themes and historical context, though some fans of the book may notice differences in character portrayals and specific events.

    Production

The miniseries took about a year to produce, at a cost of US$40 million. The project was funded by the German production company Tandem Communications, the Canadian film company Muse Entertainment Enterprises, and the UK and U.S. based Scott Free Productions. It was filmed in Austria and Hungary in 2009. The final aerial shot is of modern-day Salisbury with a CGI cathedral combining elements of Salisbury Cathedral and Wells Cathedral, to represent the complete fictional Kingsbridge Cathedral, which were the two cathedrals which inspired Follett during the writing of the novel. The series was followed by an adaptation of the sequel World Without End in 2012.

A good mini-series about the 12th century in England; with good actors. 8.5 out of 10

I liked the rare era in cinema, medieval mysticism, the history of the cathedral and its creators – Tom the Builder and Prior Philip. I didn’t like the witch’s pretentious sermons, the terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrential of lovers and the evil because evil enemies. I would like less black and white, but fans of Ivanhoe will like it
