The Book Behind the Film "The Shaggy Dog" (1959)

    About the Book

The film "The Shaggy Dog" is based on the book The Hound of Florence by Felix Salten. This novel was originally published in 1923 and is a fantasy story that explores themes of transformation and identity.

    About the Author

Felix Salten was an Austrian author and critic, best known for his novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods, which was later adapted into the famous Disney animated film. Salten's works often delve into the natural world and the lives of animals, reflecting his keen interest in nature and storytelling.

    Film Adaptation

The film adaptation of The Hound of Florence takes significant creative liberties with the source material. While the book is set in Europe and involves a young man who magically transforms into a dog, the film shifts the setting to a contemporary American suburb and introduces new characters and comedic elements. The core concept of transformation remains, but the film's tone and narrative are tailored to suit a family-friendly audience, diverging from the original novel's more serious undertones.

    Production

Walt Disney had previously bought the rights to Felix Salten's 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods and produced an adaptation of it in 1942 under his animation department. Prior to that film's release, Walt Disney bought the rights to five more Salten novels in May 1941, as well as options to have him adapt them. The novels were Bambi's Children, Perri, Renni, City Jungle, and The Hound of Florence. He did not want to make Bambi's Children but did not want anyone else to make it; however, he intended to make the other films as cartoons. Salten was then living in Switzerland and was paid out of funds owing to Disney's then-distributor RKO Radio Pictures which had been "frozen" in that country; this would be credited against money RKO owed Disney for distributing his films. (Salten would die in Zurich in 1945.)
