    Book Behind the Film "Alphaville"

    Overview

The film "Alphaville" (1965) directed by Jean-Luc Godard is not directly based on a specific book. Instead, it draws inspiration from various literary and philosophical sources, blending elements of science fiction and film noir.

    Inspirations and Literary References

While "Alphaville" is not an adaptation of a single book, it incorporates themes and ideas from several works:

      • George Orwell's 1984: The dystopian setting and the concept of a totalitarian regime controlling language and thought are reminiscent of Orwell's classic novel.

      • Aldous Huxley's Brave New World: The film explores themes of dehumanization and the loss of individuality, similar to Huxley's vision of a controlled society.

      • Paul Éluard's Poetry: The film features references to the works of surrealist poet Paul Éluard, emphasizing the power of language and emotion in a mechanized world.

    Author and Influence

Although there is no single author behind the story of "Alphaville," the film's narrative and thematic elements are influenced by the works of several authors and thinkers. Jean-Luc Godard himself is known for his innovative approach to filmmaking, often incorporating literary and philosophical ideas into his work.

    Film's Correspondence to Literary Sources

"Alphaville" is a unique creation that does not adhere to a specific book but rather synthesizes various literary and philosophical influences. The film's narrative structure, visual style, and thematic depth reflect Godard's interpretation of these sources, resulting in a work that stands on its own as a cinematic exploration of dystopian and existential themes.

    Production

Despite its futuristic scenario, Alphaville was filmed entirely in and around Paris and no special sets or props were constructed. Buildings used were the Electricity Board building for the Alpha 60 computer centre and the Hotel Scribe.

An example – although this will be according to Auster – how to film science fiction without science fiction with the words "imagine that this is science fiction." A fair amount of psychological violence: after the first half hour, the nervous system simply stopped perceiving the information flowing from the screen. Cinema is not my world.

One of my favorite dystopian films. Moreover, it was created without any bright special effects. However, the world shown in this film is striking in its coldness and inhumanity.

"Alphaville" is a unique cinematic work. A movie that overturns generally accepted genres and becomes something original and special. Dystopia – made in the spirit of the French new wave, with magnificent music by Paul Mizraki, which creates a special atmosphere.

It turned out to be not a typical cool movie for me. That from the very production you see a different world, a wonderful philosophy and that it was some miracles of Alphaville to show its other side to the cameraman, bravo for filming the entire film and these effects are impressive. And I want to say that I am delighted with everything.

A very unique film and if you like classics and bad sound, pictures and fights with shooting, then you will be curious about what technology has come to in the 60s. I am already silent about the dialogues and acting, although there are long shots, but they do not save the film. There are many questions left…

Futuristic noir. In short, I didn’t understand the movie. The picture is very difficult to perceive both in meaning and in narration. Strange dialogues and characters. My knowledge of high things, unfortunately, was not enough. I only appreciated the gloom and atmosphere.
