Book Behind the Film "Stonehearst Asylum"

    Title and Author

The film "Stonehearst Asylum" is based on the short story The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether by Edgar Allan Poe.

    About the Author

Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer known for his macabre and gothic tales. He is often credited with pioneering the detective fiction genre and contributing significantly to the emerging genre of science fiction. His works are characterized by their exploration of the human psyche, often delving into themes of madness and the supernatural.

    Summary of the Book

The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether is a short story that explores themes of sanity and madness. It is set in a mental institution where the lines between the patients and the staff become blurred. The story is known for its dark humor and satirical take on the treatment of mental illness in the 19th century.

    Film Adaptation

The film "Stonehearst Asylum" takes inspiration from Poe's story but expands upon it to create a more detailed narrative. While the core theme of blurred lines between sanity and madness remains, the film introduces new characters and plot elements to build a more complex storyline.

    Comparison to the Book

      • Faithfulness to the Source: The film retains the central theme of the original story but diverges significantly in terms of plot and character development.

      • Additional Elements: The film introduces new characters and subplots that are not present in Poe's short story, providing a more elaborate narrative structure.

      • Overall Tone: While the film maintains the gothic and eerie atmosphere of Poe's work, it incorporates modern cinematic elements to appeal to contemporary audiences.

    Production

Principal photography began in Bulgaria on June 21, 2013. On July 31, 2014, the film's title Eliza Graves was changed to Stonehearst Asylum.

Believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you see.

We are all mad, Dr. Newgate. Some are simply not mad enough to admit it.

The world is an asylum, run by the inmates.

You cannot escape your own madness.

The only way to conquer fear is to face it.

Just a good thriller with elements of horror and detective. Dark and intriguing. The love story, despite all my dislike for love stories, did not bother me, it looked cheerful. The actors are great, especially Kingsley. In general, it is worth attention

It’s quite understandable why the localizers changed the original title of the film to a name that is in tune with Shutter Island : the films do have some similarities, even the same actor plays the head of the psychiatric hospital, but how to stop confusing them?

A gloomy psychiatric clinic located somewhere in the depths of England… such surroundings already put you in the right mood. And then the plot has several twists, albeit predictable for some. My advice: it’s better not to read any annotations at all, just watch :)

Despite the bright photography and cool cast, this is a pointless, drawn-out film about nothing.

Apparently, I’ll have to re-watch Shutter Island sometime to re-evaluate. Because if Scorsese’s film was able to last 15 minutes before the upcoming twist became obvious, then Anderson’s imperishable film seemed to be deliberately scorched in the very first scene. Ignorance is bliss.

An adorable film. No trivial dialogues. Lots of suspense.

Quite a good story. The cast is excellent. I enjoyed my two hours. The jokes of localizers with movie titles are boring, they always turn me off from watching them. Overall, it seems like an underrated project with a slightly underrated rating, but in 2014 there was a wider selection of films.
