Universal Pictures purchased the rights to the book in January 2011, having already acquired the film rights to Zamperini's life story towards the end of the 1950s. Early drafts for the film were written by William Nicholson and Richard LaGravenese while Francis Lawrence was scheduled to direct. Joel and Ethan Coen were then tapped to rewrite the script after Jolie was named director.

The scenes in the prisoner of war camp are almost a copy of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. Even the actor who played the camp commandant (Miyavi) is also a musician and composer, like Sakamoto. And the O’Connell-Miyavi confrontation line is taken from Oshima’s film. What can I say – the Coens and intertext. Translated to English

A story that is hard to believe. The trials of one person that even ten could not endure. Although there seem to be many such stories. And this story was told well. Courage, perseverance, inflexibility without "Mochilov" and uh-hey patriotism. A film about War that makes sense. Translated to English
