The idea for the film began when Herzog borrowed a book on historical adventurers from a friend. After reading a half-page devoted to Lope de Aguirre, the filmmaker became inspired and immediately devised the story. He fabricated most of the plot details and characters, although he did use some historical figures in purely fictitious ways.

Near-religious experience. An ode to human courage, stupidity and the thirst for glory. A movie that doesn’t even work, filling itself with its absolute beauty and monumentality.
Aggiere as Klaus Kinski is simply incredible, his character and his performance carries the entire film. Facial expressions, gestures and banal movements, a very colorful character, and everything else is a bonus. A good adventure movie from the 70s, you can watch and appreciate the classics.
Outwardly, this is a historical adventure drama filmed in a documentary style. But as the GG’s madness grows, the lines of reality blur, harsh surrealism emerges, telling the story of the phenomenon of leadership, cratology, and where the unlimited power of a schizoid leads.
An absolute masterpiece of cinematic art. In this seemingly simple adventure film, everyone can grasp different meanings, but the main idea is the destructive path of despotism, what Nazi Germany came to, and what we are moving towards. Besides, the movie looks simply gorgeous.
