Benedict Cumberbatch's company SunnyMarch with Hera Pictures acquired the rights in May 2017 to Megan Hunter's debut novel The End We Start From before the book had been published. Cumberbatch was quoted as saying it was "a stunning tale of motherhood [and] a striking and frighteningly real story of a family fighting for survival that will make everyone stop and think about what kind of planet we are leaving behind for our children". Cumberbatch was announced as a producer alongside Hera Pictures founder Liza Marshall, Adam Ackland, and Sophie Hunter.

You shouldn’t fall for Cumberbatch, he has a minor episode here in which a tree would have played. The film is dull rubbish, with minimal action, lazy direction and a script in which the men (gg) in the face of disaster are helpless, stupid and useless. The ending made me laugh out loud.

False localization is very confusing. Fuck you, not a cataclysm. The water here is mainly in the plot, in the eyes of countless whiners and in the chronicle. Not a single positive guy (see year of release and gender of the director). Just a splashed mess with no chance of inspection.

They promised a lot of Cumberbatch, I promised to go to the movies. Nobody kept their promises. There is no thriller here either. The whole movie I was screaming at my dog with the question "do you understand what’s going on here and what are they all afraid of?!" My dog is smart, but there is no answer to my question
